What is Right to Choose?
Right to Choose is an NHS option that allows you to choose which NHS-approved provider you are referred to for certain consultant-led services, such as ADHD or autism assessments.
This option is only available for services that are commissioned by the NHS and that accept Right to Choose referrals. Not all services or providers offer this pathway.
Choosing a Provider
If you decide to use Right to Choose, the provider you are referred to must be chosen by you.
Your GP practice is not able to research, compare, or recommend providers. This helps ensure the process remains fair and patient-led.
- You must provide the exact name of the provider
- You must tell us which service you are requesting
- We cannot proceed with a referral without this information
How to Request a Right to Choose Referral
Step 1
Choose the provider you would like to be referred to. A list of providers can be found on the ADHD UK Right to Choose website:
Step 2
Complete any referral forms, screening questionnaires, or checklists required by your chosen provider.
Step 3
Email theridingsmedicalgroup@nhs.net and include:
- Your full name
- Your date of birth
- Confirmation that you would like a referral under the Right to Choose pathway
- The name of your chosen provider
- The service you are requesting
- Any completed questionnaires or assessment forms required by the provider
You do not need to book a GP appointment for this referral. Our secretarial team will arrange the referral and will send you a message once it has been completed.
Important Information About Medication
Please be aware that The Ridings Medical Group does not enter into shared care prescribing arrangements with Right to Choose providers for ADHD medications.
If your assessment results in a recommendation for ADHD medication, your chosen provider must be willing to prescribe and continue monitoring that medication.
This means that the practice will not be able to prescribe ADHD medication following assessment through a Right to Choose provider.
Children and Young People (Under 18)
For children and young people, the standard NHS ADHD referral pathway is usually through the school SENCO (Special Educational Needs Coordinator).
Right to Choose referrals may also be available. To request a referral:
- Choose a provider from the ADHD UK Right to Choose list.
- Complete any required referral forms.
- Email your request and supporting documentation to the practice.
